Current Student-Athletes: Policies

Alcohol Policy
The Department of Athletics does not condone the use or distribution of alcohol by student-athletes. Student-athletes who violate this policy shall be subject to discipline, dismissal or citation as applicable.

  • First Violation: Suspension from all team practices/scheduled events for 3 weeks.
  • Second Violation: Expulsion of the student-athlete from the athletic program.

    Amateurism
    Only an amateur student-athlete is eligible for intercollegiate athletic participation in a particular sport (NCAA Bylaw 12.01.1). An individual loses amateur status and thus shall not be eligible for intercollegiate competition in a particular sport if the individual: (1) Uses his or her athletics skill (directly or indirectly) for pay in any form in that sport, (2) Accepts a promise of pay even if such pay is to be received following completion of intercollegiate athletics participation, (3) Signs a contract or commitment of any kind to play professional athletics, regardless of its legal enforceability or any consideration received, (4) Receives, directly or indirectly, a salary, reimbursement of expenses or any other form of financial assistance from a professional sports organization based upon athletics skill or participation, except as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations, (5) Competes on any professional athletics team (per Bylaw 12.02.4), even if no pay or remuneration for expenses was received, (6) Subsequent to initial full-time collegiate enrollment, enters into a professional draft (see also Bylaw 12.2.4.2.1).

    Drug Testing Policy
    The Department of Athletics is committed to making every effort to prevent the use and abuse of drugs by its student-athletes. Because of the physical demands of intercollegiate athletics and the potential phyiscal and emotional damage that can result from drug use, the Northern Colorado athletic administration and coaching staff condemns the use of any chemicals that endanger the safety and health of student-athletes. Educational materials on drug use are available from the Sports Medicine staff.

    Employment
    Student-athletes may be employed during the academic year; however, the employment must be approved by the Compliance Office before the employment starts. Talk to your head coach or the Compliance Office before you began any work during the academic year. Below are NCAA guidelines regarding employment:

  • All student-athletes may work during the following institutional vacation periods: 1) Summer vacation, and 2) Winter break/Spring break
  • Student-athletes can be compensated only for work actually performed.
  • Student-athletes cannot be paid more than the going rate in your locality for similar services.
  • Compensation may include remuneration for teaching or coaching sport skills or techniques in his or her sport on a fee-for-lesson basis. However, such employment must be approved by the Compliance Office and must meet the following criteria: 1) Institutional facilities are not being used, 2) Playing lessons shall not be permitted, 3) The institution obtains and keeps on file documentation of the recipient of lesson(s) and the fee for the lesson(s) provided during any tim of the year, and 4) The compensation is paid by the lesson recipient or the recipient's family and not another individual or entity.

    Extra Benefits
    A special arrangement by UNC employees, boosters, alumni, or friends of UNC Athletics provided to UNC student-athletes, relatives, or friends. By receiving an extra benefit, you will become INELIGIBLE for intercollegiate athletics competition. Examples of extra benefits that student-athletes are not allowed to receive: (1) Discounts/Credits: No special discounts, payment arrangements, purchases, or services, (2) Free/Reduced Cost Services: Professional services must be provided at the normal cost rate), (3) Telephone/Credit Cards: Cannot use an athletic department telephone/credit card for personal reasons without charge or at a reduced rate, (4) Entertainment: Cannot receive services (e.g.,movie tickets, dinners, use of car) from commercial agencies without charge or at a reduced rate, (5) Loan of Money, (6) Guarantee of Bond, (7) Use of an automobile, (8) Assistance in payment of bills (see also Bylaw16.02.3).

    Hosting a Recruit
    What Northern Colorado student-athletes should know: 1)This money may be used to entertain the recruit, recruit's parents, and yourself within 30 miles of campus. You may not travel to Fort Collins or Denver, 2) Cash may NOT be used to buy souvenirs such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, game programs, etc. 3) A student host may NOT use an Athletic Department staff member's, University's, or Booster's automobile to transport the recruit, 4) Only one student-athlete per recruit may receive a free restaurant meal with the recruit while accompanying a coach, and 5) You MUST submit receipts and all remaining money to a coach to account for the spent host money!

    Sports Wagering
    Staff members of a member conference, staff members of the athletics department of a member institution and student-athletes shall not knowingly: (1) provide information to individuals involved in organized gambling activities concerning intercollegiate athletics competition, (2) solicit a bet on any intercollegiate team,(3) accept a bet on any team representing the institution, (4) solicit or accept a bet on any intercollegiate competition for any item (e.g., cash, shirt, dinner, etc.) that has tangible value, or (5) participate in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics, through a bookmaker, a parlay card or any method employed by organized gambling (see also Bylaw 10.3).
