Northern Colorado Traditions

1895 Bears Football Team

The University of Northern Colorado has known lots of success and had lots of tradition over the years. From the early days of football (pictured above is the 1895 team, the third team the university fielded) to the baseball program that has made 10 College World Series appearances (12th all-time) and produced several major league players and managers (including former All-American Greg Riddoch, pictured at the bottom of the page, who managed the San Diego Padres).

Over the years the program has produced 31 individual national champions, three national players of the year, two team national champions and well over 400 All-Americans and over 40 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

The school has seen several name changes since its inception:

  • State Normal School (1889-1911)
  • Colorado State Teachers College (1911-35)
  • Colorado State College of Education (1935-57)
  • Colorado State College (1957-70)
  • University of Northern Colorado (1971-present)
